writing was easier before I learned to code

I used to write in word, or text edit, or google docs.

Then everything was in vim. Vim was even more productive in some ways.

Then, I got sucked into emacs. Now everything is buried in headlines and has metadata. I have no idea how to share a writing project with others. I don't know how to export in a readable way. Everything has 5 different options, and the 16th is the fact that I could just code my own million ways.

It's just much harder to stop working on writing tools long enough to write something. Maybe code is more fun? It's definitely easier to justify.

How do you justify your own writing?

My writing is scattered! I feel like I've created things, but over the years, it's difficult to see anything when looking back. What have I done? What ideas are in progress? What is there to build on?

I'm hoping this garden can be self-organizing, and I can start to pull all my old stuff into here.

Things to capture in here:

  • Poems
  • Short Stories
  • Comic Scripts
  • Code 'design'/'architecture'/'planning' docs
  • Principles
  • Any and every random thought or note
  • Techy, TIL/tutorial Blog posts
  • Daily misc blog posts
  • years of journals and prompts
  • Character ideas
  • Settings/places
  • Video game concepts
  • Personal stories
  • Life stories
  • Pocketed articles and related thoughts
  • Movie/Book/Music reviews/thoughts/take-aways

What doesn't go in the garden?

  • Code (that goes in repos)

One thing that is attractive about mind-gardens, zettlekasten, and related tools: to an extent, they self-organize.
